The 'Men's Club Valentines' Experience
posted Tuesday, 14 February 2006
No, heaven forbid, I'm not posting ahead of schedule this week. The plan was that as this post is about Valentines it would make sense to have it on Valentines Day, rather than the 16th - which does make some sense.
The general discussion is about whether Valentines Day is a wonderful romantic experience or just an over-commercialised slush-by-compulsion-fest.
I wasn't particularly enamoured by Valentines Day last year it has to be said. It seemed to have completely lost any semblance of its original meaning and I generally wasn't up for it at all, even if I did send my attached workmate a card, just to feel part of the whole experience.
This year obviously it's a bit different, as I'm much happier with my love life. However, the day itself still doesn't really do anything for me. So I won't be spending any money on gifts, or choccies or flowers or any of that shite this year. It's far too close to Christmas to fork out on loads of presents in my humble opinion, and doing romantic things on a day when every other fucker is also feeling obliged to do romantic things really doesn't inspire me!!
And the fact that I won't actually be seeing my Valentine today makes it even less interesting. So we'll be having our own day on Saturday, when we'll be doing lovely things for each other like we always do anyway.
I always feel that if you have to wait for the 14th February each year to do something special for your partner, then you might as well give it all up as a lost cause. If you don't regularly feel inspired to do nice things for your other half then there's something very wrong in there somewhere, and a manky bunch of £2.99 flowers from the garage on the way home from work really isn't going to fix it for you methinks.
Just like the spirit of Christmas should be within us all year round, so should the spirit of Valentines. And a dog's for life, not just for Valentines Christmas.
